August 23 - Professional Development

TO: Fine Arts Teachers
FR: Mark Coates, Coordinator of Fine Arts
RE: August 23 Professional Development Day
DATE: July 30, 2011

Fine Arts teachers have been making connections to mathematics and language arts through the content of their individual discipline. Within the Fine Arts, the content of art, music, dance, and theatre are based on Fine Arts Artistic Behaviors:
  • Critical Thinking and Problem Solving
  • Creating Personal Meaning
  • Social, Cultural, Historical, and Contemporary Context
  • Communication and Collaboration
  • Creativity & Innovation
  • Information and Technology Literacy
  • Productivity, Accountability and Self-Direction
  • Leadership and Responsibility.

These Fine Arts Artistic Behaviors share commonalities with the Standards for Mathematical Practice:
  • Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them
  • Reason abstractly and quantitatively
  • Construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others
  • Model with mathematics
  • Use appropriate tools strategically
  • Attend to precision
  • Look and make use of structure
  • Look for and express regularity in repeated reasoning.

Additionally, Fine Arts teachers encourage their students to be articulate. As artists, we believe in the importance of being able to be reflective, have the ability to critique your work and the work of others, have the ability to follow directions, as well as to be able to write clearly.

On Friday, August 23rd, as part of the professional development on the Common Core, Fine Arts teachers will have the opportunity to meet for 90 minutes and participate in a guided discussion on ways art, music, dance, and theatre help support the Common Core. At the elementary and middle levels, art and music teachers will meet, and at the high school level art, music, dance, and theatre teachers will meet. A designated group leader will facilitate the discussion using a power point presentation. Access to the power point presentation is through the link below. An individual who will act as recorder will be designated for each group, and use the link for the Google Doc to record responses to the discussion questions that are embedded in the power point presentation.
